Who exactly is Supergirl, and what happened to Krypton?
Like every long-running comic book character, Kara Zor-El (the hero best known as Supergirl) has decades of extensive source material for filmmakers to draw from. This new big-screen take is the combined creative vision of James Gunn, co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, and director Craig Gillespie.
Portrayed by Milly Alcock, Supergirl is Superman’s biological cousin. David Corenswet reprises his role as the Man of Steel for this film, following his debut in the 2025 Superman feature.
As in most DC continuities, the pair’s home planet of Krypton was destroyed by core instability. Before the planet exploded, Superman’s birth parents Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van sent him to Earth to survive. In a major departure from earlier films and classic comic book storylines, 2025’s Superman revealed that Jor-El and Lara originally intended for Kal-El to conquer Earth and father children with multiple human women to rebuild the Kryptonian race. He ultimately rejected this plan and chose a different path as Earth’s protector.
